El Ojo, also known as Eye Island or Circular Island, is a unique and mysterious floating island located in the delta of the Paraná River in northeastern Argentina.
The island, which has a diameter of about 120 meters, is almost perfectly circular in shape and is characterized by continuous rotation around its axis.
Discovered in 2016. It was discovered in 2016 by Argentine director Sergio Neuspiller while looking for a location for his film about paranormal phenomena. Upon his return to the site, he realized that the island had changed position, a movement confirmed by Google satellite images taken at different times. The images also showed that the island has been in the Paraná River delta for twenty years, since 2003.
Floating islands exist around the world. They form when the root of a river plant detaches from the bottom because the water has become too deep. It’s common for such islands to move, i.e., the wind moves them back and forth. For example, in Lake Titicaca, a group of 120 such floating islands is inhabited by the Uru tribe, but they require constant maintenance due to their delicate and unstable structure. However, unlike them, El Ojo is surprisingly solid and compact, as reported by Punkufer.hr.
Science without answers It’s possible that this island is actually a broken piece of land whose rotation caused what is technically called rotational slumping, where the edges are ground, forming its circular shape. Some attribute this phenomenon to a natural source in swamps, which might explain why the island moves so consistently. Neuspiller tried to gather funds for researching the island but was unsuccessful, leaving the forces that rotate El Ojo and its unique characteristics unknown.
Hence, there is no shortage of theories about the island: from speculation that it is a secret Nazi base or a UFO hideout to those that claim it has a supernatural origin. In any case, El Ojo is certainly one of the most mysterious and fascinating places in the world.
